Advice for valuable rugs

The whole rug matters, not just the pile
A rug can look robust on top and still have a moisture-sensitive foundation underneath. Hand-knotted pieces, machine-made rugs, glued tufted rugs and flatweaves behave differently. The cleaning decision takes the construction into account as well as the visible material. A faded patch, weakened fringe or curling edge should be noted before treatment so existing damage is clear.
When calling, give the width and length, including whether the fringe is included in your measurement. Photographs of the whole rug, reverse, label and problem areas are helpful if a suitable way to send them is arranged. Tell us about its value and any known repairs. A rug inherited without a label should not be treated as an ordinary synthetic rug simply because its fibre is unknown.

Wool, silk and sensitive blends
Wool can retain a large amount of dry soil between its fibres. Removing that soil matters before introducing moisture. Silk and viscose can be far more sensitive to handling, colour change and texture distortion, and need careful suitability checks. Blends may look similar to a single-fibre rug while responding differently to the same cleaning solution.
Natural plant-fibre rugs, delicate backing and unstable dyes can limit the methods available. The service describes care for wool, silk and synthetic rugs, but that does not mean every rug can receive every treatment. We discuss an unsuitable or uncertain construction rather than promising a universal wash. For wall-to-wall material, see fitted carpet cleaning, where the backing and installation present a different set of constraints.
Dry soil removal before wet work
Fine grit can sit deep within a rug even when the surface has been vacuumed regularly. The published process includes removing dry dust and debris before main cleaning. That preparation reduces the amount of loose soil being moved through the pile and helps make the subsequent treatment more controlled. The approach must respect weak edges and fragile fibres.
Hot water extraction or a lower-moisture method is considered according to the rug. The amount of water, the stability of dyes and the condition of the foundation all matter. Do not assume immersion, collection to a specialist plant or a particular drying system is included: ask how your rug would be handled, where the work would take place and whether any transport is being quoted.
Fringes, edges and stains
Fringes may be part of the rug’s foundation rather than a decorative strip attached afterwards. Aggressive brushing or bleaching can damage them. Mention darkened tassels, missing sections and earlier repairs so they can be assessed separately from the pile. Cleaning will not replace missing fringe or tighten a damaged weave.
Food, drink and pet marks need treatment based on their source and the rug’s dyes. Tell us if you have used a supermarket cleaner or had the rug professionally cleaned before. Colour loss from sunlight or bleach is different from removable staining. On patterned rugs, a stain can also be hidden until the surrounding soil is reduced, which is why expectations should be discussed before work begins.

Protecting the floor and arranging the visit
Clear objects from the rug and explain the floor surface below it. Timber, laminate and other moisture-sensitive floors need protection and an appropriate work plan. A damp rug should not be laid straight back onto a vulnerable floor without following the drying advice. Check the reverse as well as the top when deciding whether it is ready to return.
If the rug is beneath heavy furniture, agree how it will be made accessible. Do not fold a damp or fragile rug tightly for transport. Where collection is requested, confirm that it is offered, the handling arrangements and any charge before assuming it is part of the service. For linked furniture work, fabric sofa cleaning can be quoted separately without treating both materials identically.
Odours and damage that cleaning cannot repair
Pet contamination can penetrate through the pile and foundation. A rug may also pick up a musty smell after being stored or left damp. Tell us where the smell comes from and whether the rug has been wet for a long period. Repeated surface fragrance does not remove the underlying cause and can complicate the assessment.
Cleaning is not rug restoration. Holes, insect damage, fraying, dye migration and distorted foundations may need a specialist repair or conservation service. An old rug can remain visibly aged after soil is removed. We avoid promising a new appearance or complete stain removal when that would require rebuilding or recolouring the textile.

A quotation based on the rug
Size alone is not enough to price a valuable or delicate piece. Construction, material, condition, access and stain history all affect the work. Our price guide separates published indicative ranges from a confirmed quotation. The general guide range below is a starting point. Silk, oversized rugs and any requested transport need a confirmed quotation for the actual item and arrangements.
Confirm whether the quotation covers the whole rug, fringes, agreed spot treatment and any requested transport. No additional fees are added above the agreed quotation. Check coverage and give your postcode when requesting a visit. A clear description makes the quote more useful than an unspecified price per rug, especially where two pieces have similar dimensions but very different materials.
Keeping the rug in good condition
Vacuum according to the maker’s guidance and be gentle around fringes. Rotating a rug can spread foot traffic and sunlight exposure more evenly, where the room layout allows. Deal with spills promptly by blotting rather than rubbing. Avoid soaking the reverse or piling other textiles onto a damp rug.
After cleaning, ask how the rug should dry and when it can go back into use. The weave, thickness and room conditions influence drying, so a fixed deadline is not a reliable promise. If you are preparing several items before a move, contact us with the full list and the dates involved; handling and access can then be planned together.

A clear plan for your rug
Rugs need attention beyond their visible pattern. Discuss backing, dye stability, fringe condition and drying with Fanatic before agreeing treatment. Cleaning can address suitable removable soil; repairs and specialist conservation are separate needs.
Questions about rug cleaning
Can you clean a hand-knotted rug?
It needs a construction, dye and condition assessment first. Tell us about its origin, value and any repairs, and do not assume a standard synthetic-rug treatment is appropriate.
Will you whiten the fringe?
Fringe cleaning should respect the fibre and foundation. Whitening is not a guaranteed result, and aggressive bleach treatment can weaken the fringe.
Is rug collection included?
Collection and off-site cleaning are not assumed. Ask whether these arrangements are available for your rug and whether transport affects the quotation.
Can a viscose rug be wet cleaned?
Viscose can be vulnerable to texture and colour changes. Suitability must be checked rather than promised from a photograph or a general service description.
What should I do with a fresh spill?
Blot with a clean absorbent cloth without scrubbing or saturating the backing. Follow the maker’s guidance and avoid trying several cleaning products on the same area.
Will cleaning repair a curled edge?
Cleaning does not repair a distorted foundation or damaged edge. Mention curling before booking so cleaning and repair needs are kept separate.
How do I measure a rug for a quote?
Give its width and length and say whether those measurements include the fringe. Add the material, construction if known and photographs of any problem areas.
